Knicks Continue Search for New Head Coach After Thibodeau’s Dismissal
The New York Knicks are actively looking for their next head coach following the recent firing of Tom Thibodeau. This change comes after Thibodeau led the Knicks to their first Eastern Conference Finals appearance in 25 years, making the search both critical and high-profile.
Thibodeau took over during a challenging time for the team in 2020, guiding them out of a seven-season slump of losses. Under his leadership, the Knicks achieved impressive back-to-back 50-win seasons, culminating in a playoff run that many fans celebrated. However, the Knicks’ management has decided to move in a different direction.
As the search unfolds, the organization is on the lookout for someone who can build upon Thibodeau’s accomplishments and bring home the team’s first NBA championship since 1973. This is no small task, and the Knicks are contemplating which candidates might be capable of achieving such goals.
So far, the Knicks have faced challenges in scheduling interviews with several notable coaches. They requested to speak with Dallas Mavericks’ Jason Kidd, Minnesota Timberwolves’ Chris Finch, and Houston Rockets’ Ime Udoka, but those requests were turned down by the respective teams. Each of these coaches has had recent success: Kidd took the Mavericks to the NBA Finals last season, Finch advanced the Timberwolves to the Western Conference Finals, and Udoka ended a playoff drought for the Rockets, clinching the No. 2 seed in the West this year.
Furthermore, Jay Wright, a nationally renowned college coach from Villanova, also expressed that he is not interested in the Knicks’ vacancy despite his strong connection to some current players. Wright coached Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, and Mikal Bridges during his impressive tenure at Villanova, where he secured two national championships.
Thibodeau’s dismissal came shortly after the Knicks concluded a promising playoff run. They faced a tough setback against the Indiana Pacers, ultimately losing in six games. Still, Thibodeau’s achievements during his tenure included breaking the team’s playoff drought and earning the NBA Coach of the Year award.
Initially, Thibodeau’s exit surprised many because he had pushed the team to win 51 games last season—its best record in over a decade. He not only led the team back to competitiveness but also managed back-to-back 50-win seasons for the first time since the early 90s.
Despite Thibodeau’s strong performance, Knicks President Leon Rose stated in his announcement that the decision was made with the organization’s future in mind, thanking Thibodeau for his commitment and success during his time with the team.
As the Knicks aim to fill this vacancy, there are still potential candidates from which to choose. Even though some high-profile names are off the table, there are still several options available. For instance, coaches like Michael Malone, Mike Budenholzer, and Jeff Van Gundy may come into consideration.
Malone, previously the head coach of the Denver Nuggets, earned distinction by leading that franchise to its first-ever NBA championship this past season. Budenholzer, while having mixed results with the Phoenix Suns, has a championship title with the Milwaukee Bucks and has been recognized as Coach of the Year multiple times. Van Gundy, who has not coached since 2007, remains a respected figure from his time with the Knicks during the 90s.
Other notable names reported include Luke Walton and Mike Brown, both of whom have had mixed success in their previous coaching roles. Brown achieved playoff success with the Sacramento Kings, while Walton struggled with his time at the helm of the Lakers and Kings.
Additionally, potential candidates like Taylor Jenkins from the Memphis Grizzlies and Darvin Ham from the Los Angeles Lakers have also been mentioned as interests for the Knicks’ coaching job.
As the Knicks continue their search for a head coach, the decisions they make in this critical period could shape the future of the franchise. Fans are eager to see who will take the reins and lead the team into a new chapter filled with opportunities and challenges alike.
