Clemson Holds Off Pittsburgh for Nail-Biting 24-20 Victory
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Cade Klubnick made a bold move, dashing 50 yards for a key touchdown with just over a minute left in the game, helping No. 17 Clemson secure a narrow 24-20 win over Pittsburgh on Saturday.
The Tigers (8-2, 7-1 ACC) struggled offensively for most of the game, especially on the ground. However, Klubnick’s impressive run caught the Panthers off guard, reigniting Clemson’s hopes for a spot in the ACC championship game. The junior quarterback ended the game with 288 passing yards and two touchdown passes, along with 41 rushing yards that mostly came after Pittsburgh took the lead with a 47-yard field goal from Ben Sauls.
Antonio Williams was a standout for the Tigers, catching 13 passes for 149 yards and scoring twice. To clinch a place in the conference title game on December 7, Clemson now needs No. 12 Miami to lose at least once in their final two games or for No. 14 SMU to lose both of theirs.
Pittsburgh’s Nate Yarnell, filling in for the injured Eli Holstein, threw for 350 yards and connected with Gavin Bartholomew for a game-tying touchdown with just over seven minutes left. Unfortunately for the Panthers, Yarnell’s last pass was intercepted by Clemson’s Khalil Barnes at the goal line as the game came to a close.
Desmond Reid shone for the Panthers (7-3, 3-3), amassing 176 rushing yards. Pittsburgh outgained Clemson 438 to 346 and had better control in the second half until Klubnick turned the tide with his running abilities.
Clemson’s Road Ahead:
While the Tigers have faced challenges this season and may not be in the running for a Heisman nominee, Klubnick’s performance was a highlight that helped them secure this crucial victory, especially after a tough day on the ground where they managed only eight rushing yards until their final drive.
Pittsburgh’s Struggles:
The Panthers showcased much effort but lacked precision, leading to their third consecutive loss after a promising 7-0 start. Mistakes continued to haunt them, including pre-snap penalties during a crucial moment in the game that turned a first-and-goal opportunity into a mere field goal.
Looking Forward:
Clemson will play against The Citadel next Saturday, while Pittsburgh is set to face No. 22 Louisville on the same day.
