The Sacramento Kings have decided to part ways with general manager Monte McNair after a challenging season, marking the end of a two-year partnership. McNair played a crucial role in ending the Kings’ lengthy playoff drought, which had lasted for 16 seasons. However, the team recently faced disappointment after a 120-106 loss to the Dallas Mavericks in the Play-In Tournament, leading to the mutual decision to move on from McNair.
McNair joined the Kings at the beginning of the 2020-21 season and was instrumental in assembling a competitive roster that achieved a playoff berth in 2023. That season, the Kings posted a 48-34 record, finishing third in the Western Conference, and McNair was honored as the NBA Executive of the Year.
Unfortunately, the Kings struggled to maintain that momentum. After losing a first-round playoff series to the Golden State Warriors, the team was unable to return to the playoffs in the following two seasons, facing elimination in the Play-In Tournament each time.
This past season was particularly difficult, as the Kings had to make significant changes. The team let go of coach Mike Brown in December and traded star player De’Aaron Fox to San Antonio in February, finishing with a disappointing 40-42 record and placing ninth in the conference.
McNair’s overall record with the Kings stands at 195-205. During his tenure, he made key moves such as trading for star center Domantas Sabonis and signing free agent Malik Monk. However, the team was unable to take the next step toward being a serious contender in the Western Conference.
Now, Sacramento has a decision to make regarding interim coach Doug Christie, who had a record of 27-24 after stepping in for Brown. Christie expressed his desire to remain with the team and finish what he started, although he has not received any clarity about his future.
As the Kings seek a new general manager, this will be the fifth hiring since owner Vivek Ranadive took over in 2013. The organization has struggled with coaching changes, having cycled through nine coaches, and currently holds one of the worst records in the NBA. The future of the team rests on finding the right leadership to turn things around and finally become a consistent playoff contender.
