The trials faced by Prince William and Princess Kate have only strengthened their marriage, say those who observe the Royal Family.
After Princess Kate’s cancer diagnosis in March 2024, and her announcement of being cancer-free in January 2025, the couple appears to have grown even closer.
Royal watcher Ian Pelham Turner told Fox News Digital that old rumors of trouble in the marriage seem to have faded. Instead, the couple presents a united front, strengthened by the challenges they have faced together.
Turner believes that Kate’s illness may have reminded William of her importance in his life, rekindling their bond. He noted their decision to seek a more private life, away from the constant gaze of the palace, shows a focus on family.
The family moved to Forest Lodge in Windsor Great Park last November. Royal expert Sally Bedell Smith suggested that Adelaide Cottage, their previous home, held too many difficult memories, including the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles’s own cancer diagnosis.
Hilary Fordwich, another royal expert, agrees that William and Kate’s marriage has become stronger through adversity. She noted that they avoid getting caught up in gossip, which is admirable.
Helena Chard, a British broadcaster and photographer, observes that Kate seems focused on strengthening connections, both privately and publicly. Chard says that this commitment to family resonates with the public, and that their relationship is clearly thriving.
Since her cancer announcement, Kate has returned to royal duties, with the couple making several joint appearances. These appearances have shown a warmth and affection that some observers say was less visible in the past.
William has also been more open about the difficulties his family has faced. During a trip to South Africa in November 2024, he described the year as “brutal,” but expressed pride in his wife and father for how they handled their challenges.
He also spoke about how he and Kate have chosen to be more open with their children about difficult topics, like her cancer diagnosis. While admitting there’s no perfect way to parent, he believes that honesty helps children feel less anxious.
Fordwich says that William’s public praise of Kate, and his openness about their struggles, makes him more relatable. She added that their public displays of affection show a more modern monarchy, and that their mutual love and respect is clear.
