Karen Huger, a star from the reality show “Real Housewives of Potomac,” faced a Montgomery County Circuit Court on February 26, where she received a two-year prison sentence for a drunk driving incident. One year of that sentence is suspended, meaning she won’t have to serve that time if she follows the rules set by the court. Huger, who is 61 years old, was accompanied by her husband Ray during the hearing and must also complete five years of probation. She has a month to decide if she wants to appeal the judge’s ruling.
While being taken into custody, witnesses reported that Huger reassured her husband, telling him, “You will be alright” and “God’s got you.”
Huger was arrested in March 2024 after crashing her car into a street sign near her home. Video footage showed her stumbling and struggling to speak, during which she mentioned having “a couple of beers.” She faced multiple charges, including driving under the influence and driving recklessly.
In December, a jury found her guilty on most charges, only clearing her of one reckless driving count. Following the verdict, Huger’s attorney expressed disappointment but respected the decision, affirming their intent to pursue an appeal.
In January, Huger entered a recovery program in Florida to address her struggles with alcohol and antidepressants. This step delayed her sentencing as she also changed her legal representation.
Though she appeared at the reunion for season 9 of “Real Housewives of Potomac” through videos, she addressed her issues with drinking, insisting she does not consider herself an alcoholic but urged fans to learn from her mistakes.
Huger expressed concern for her family, stating that their well-being is her priority during this challenging time. She also acknowledged the support from various cast members and celebrated her relationships, expressing determination to rebuild her life as Karen Huger, emphasizing that she is enough as she is.
Her new attorney highlighted the impact this experience has had on her, describing it as a “wake-up call.” Despite her past alcohol-related traffic incidents, Huger is reportedly committed to her recovery and has been participating actively in Alcoholics Anonymous.
