Kara Young: A Rising Star in Broadway’s "Purpose"
Kara Young is not a typical actress. When asked about her favorite role, she simply smiles and says they all mean something special to her. “Each project feels crucial at the moment,” Young explains, reflecting her deep passion for storytelling.
Currently, Young is shining in the acclaimed play "Purpose," a thought-provoking drama by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins being staged at the Helen Hayes Theater. The play focuses on a well-off Black family confronting their own hidden truths during a snowy family gathering.
“There’s so much depth in this play,” Young says, portraying an outsider observing the unraveling of family dynamics. She describes Jacobs-Jenkins as a master at creating meaningful worlds, often found in the nuances of dialogue.
A Turbulent Family Reunion
Set in an affluent neighborhood in Chicago, "Purpose" centers around the Jasper family. The head of the family, Pastor Solomon Jasper, is revered as a Civil Rights icon, while his wife Claudine maintains a strong presence. Their reunion includes their two sons—Junior, a recently released former state senator with a troubled past, and Naz, who has turned to nature photography after leaving divinity school.
Young takes on the role of Aziza, a social worker from Harlem who is friends with Naz but initially unaware of his family’s fame. Her excitement to meet the Jaspers quickly dissipates as old rivalries and family frustrations surface during dinner, leading to an emotional dinner filled with conflict.
Young emphasizes that familial tension can surface quickly, especially in a situation like this, where loved ones haven’t gathered in years.
Making History on Broadway
Kara Young, already a Tony Award nominee, stands on the brink of potentially making history. If she wins again, she would be the first Black performer to achieve two consecutive Tony wins. She debuted on Broadway in 2021 with "Clyde’s," later starring in "Cost of Living" and sharing the stage with Leslie Odom Jr. in "Purlie Victorious."
Jacobs-Jenkins describes Aziza as “deeply perceptive and empathetic.” Young finds a connection with her character, seeing them both as advocates aiming to make a positive change in the world.
“Every play I participate in feels like it has the potential to impact the world,” she shares.
Joy and Enthusiasm on Stage
Her co-star, Jon Michael Hill, describes Young as the heart of their cast, highlighting her genuine enthusiasm for connecting with others. Young embraces every moment, engaging with fans and sharing her excitement about the play wherever she goes.
A memorable moment for Young was at a gala where she celebrated both the opening of "Purpose" and Jacobs-Jenkins winning the Pulitzer Prize for drama. With joy, she encouraged everyone around her to come see the play, showcasing her passion for her craft.
Young initially stepped onto the stage in 2016, and she’s thankful to the playwright Patricia Ione Lloyd for recognizing her talent early on.
Looking ahead, Young will be seen in the upcoming film "Is God Is." She describes it as a mix of genres that promises to be exciting. She also has plans for a revival of "The Whoopi Monologues" next summer on Broadway.
“The future is mysterious, but I’m ready for whatever comes my way,” she remarks, embodying the spirit of determination and hope.
As Young continues to rise in the world of theater, her journey reflects the values of hard work, passion, and the pursuit of meaningful storytelling.
