Kandi Burruss has expressed her disappointment after the Broadway revival of Othello, which she co-produced with her husband Todd Tucker, was not nominated for any Tony Awards this year.
The revival, featuring Denzel Washington as Othello and Jake Gyllenhaal as Iago, made waves by breaking box office records, earning a remarkable $2.8 million in just one week of previews. It has become the highest-grossing play on Broadway to date.
Burruss shared her feelings through an Instagram post, saying, “I’m disappointed that Othello didn’t get a nomination, but I am so proud to be part of this incredible production.” She emphasized her admiration for the cast, noting how their performances inspire her every time she watches them.
Directed by Kenny Leon, the production has not only captivated audiences with its strong performances, but it has also faced scrutiny due to its high ticket prices, with some selling for over $900. Despite this, the director has defended the prices, likening attending the show to enjoying a major sporting event or concert. He mentioned that audience members have expressed their satisfaction, even stating they’d return for another experience.
As the Tony nominations roll out, Burruss remains optimistic about the future and is already focusing on new projects, reminding everyone chasing dreams not to let setbacks deter them.
