Morgan Geyser to Be Released from Mental Health Facility
A Wisconsin woman, Morgan Geyser, has received approval from a judge to be released from the Winnebago Mental Health Institute. Geyser, now 22, has been at the facility since 2017 after being found guilty of attempting to fatally stab her friend in 2014, when both were just 12 years old.
The incident arose from a plan developed by Geyser and her co-defendant, Anissa Weier, who aimed to impress a fictional character known as “Slenderman.” After accepting a plea deal, Geyser spent almost eight years in the psychiatric facility.
On July 17, a Waukesha County judge ruled in favor of her release after extensive discussions among experts regarding Geyser’s mental state. In January, experts testified about her positive progress, leading to a potential release order. However, release plans faced a setback in March when Geyser’s reading choices raised concerns.
In April, objections from the mother of the victim, Peyton Leutner, regarding Geyser’s moving location caused further delays. The proposed group home was situated close to where Leutner resides, raising safety concerns. After reviewing plans from the Department of Health Services, the judge ultimately approved Geyser’s release.
Geyser and Weier pulled Leutner into the woods during a sleepover, resulting in Leutner being stabbed 19 times, although she miraculously survived. The motivations for their actions centered around the myth of Slenderman.
