House Speaker Mike Johnson recently emphasized his commitment to swiftly advance President Donald Trump’s significant legislative package, known as the “big, beautiful bill.” Johnson asserted that the House is determined to pass this vital legislation by Memorial Day.
The House Budget Committee met late Sunday night after facing challenges last Friday when five Republican members voted with Democrats, hindering progress on the expansive 1,100-page “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.”
During an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” Johnson reassured the public about the ongoing negotiations. He highlighted that all commits have successfully concluded their work, achieving even greater savings than anticipated. “This is truly a once-in-a-generation opportunity for our nation,” he stated.
Once the bill clears the budget committee, Johnson plans to advance it to the House Rules Committee by mid-week, and subsequently to the House floor later in the week. He stressed the urgency of this timetable, noting, “We have a mandate from the American people to deliver on these historic tax cuts and savings.”
Johnson highlighted that these proposals are not just political maneuvers but pivotal steps to provide American workers with substantial tax relief, enhance border security, and restore the nation’s energy dominance. He also reaffirmed the commitment to ensure programs like Medicaid and SNAP are safeguarded for American citizens who truly need them.
A critical part of the legislation includes making the tax cuts from 2017 permanent by 2026. The proposal aims to eliminate taxes on overtime and tips and offers new tax relief for seniors on Social Security while cutting taxes for American businesses, fostering domestic production and manufacturing.
Johnson assured that this legislation represents the largest spending reduction seen in decades, garnering support from nearly 500 conservative organizations advocating for fiscally responsible initiatives.
The speaker expressed confidence that a resolution can be reached regarding work requirements for Medicaid recipients, admitting he shares some concerns but remains focused on the bigger picture. “This is a crucial moment, and we must seize this opportunity for the American people,” Johnson remarked.
He noted that while he expects no support from Democrats for the bill, the potential consequences of inaction would result in significant tax increases. “We need to succeed in this mission, and we will,” Johnson concluded.
