Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, expressed his hope for reconciliation between President Donald Trump and entrepreneur Elon Musk after a recent public conflict regarding the GOP’s signature legislation, known as the “one big, beautiful bill.”
During a press event on Friday, Johnson noted his surprise at Musk’s sudden criticism of Trump. He shared that he had been with the president in the Oval Office as these events unfolded and sensed Trump’s disappointment. “I believe in redemption,” Johnson stated, emphasizing the importance of unity for both the Republican Party and the country as a whole.
While he did not directly address Musk in his remarks, Johnson certainly seemed to urge the tech mogul to reconsider his stance. He firmly stated, “Do not challenge the President of the United States. He is a pivotal political figure and is doing a great job for the American people.”
When asked if he had spoken with Musk after the fallout, Johnson mentioned that they had exchanged texts but chose not to reveal their contents. He also reassured his fellow Republicans that they remained undeterred by Musk’s comments, declaring that they were focused on passing their legislation on time.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt echoed Johnson’s call for party unity, highlighting that Trump is committed to making America great again through this significant bill. Trump himself responded to Musk’s recent statements, emphasizing that he is uninterested in a conversation with Musk and isn’t concerned about the possibility of Musk starting a third political party.
Musk had criticized the Republican-led budget reconciliation bill, alleging that it does not sufficiently address federal spending cuts. In his comments, he named Trump, Johnson, and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, drawing attention to their leadership roles.
Despite the discord, Republicans appear to be rallying around Trump and the proposed legislation, indicating a firm stance in support of their priorities.
