A new coin featuring John Lennon is set to be released by the Royal Mint in the UK. This special edition coin honors the legendary Beatles member at what would be his 85th birthday. It will be available for purchase starting Monday and showcases a profile of Lennon, inspired by a well-known photograph from 1974.
The striking image captures Lennon on the rooftop of his New York City penthouse. Tragically, he was shot and killed there on December 8, 1980, at just 40 years old. The design includes his name on one side of the coin, while the word “Imagine” is featured on the other, a nod to his famous song and album from 1971.
Rebecca Morgan, a director at the Royal Mint, remarked on Lennon’s extraordinary legacy as one of the greatest artists and advocates for peace, emphasizing that this coin will serve as a lasting tribute to his impact on music and society.
The Royal Mint has a history of celebrating notable figures in music and continues this tradition with Lennon. Other music icons previously honored include Paul McCartney, David Bowie, and Queen.
Collectors and fans can expect to see various versions of this coin, ranging from less expensive options starting at £18.50 (about $24) for a basic model, to elaborate editions priced at £6,420 (around $8,330) for those looking for something truly special. While these coins are legal tender, it would be quite impractical to use one to buy a classic Beatles record, making them more of a collector’s item than everyday currency.
