Jennifer Hudson Surprises Broadway’s Smash Cast
In a delightful turn of events, Jennifer Hudson made an unexpected appearance at the Broadway musical Smash on May 15 at the Imperial Theatre in New York City. The celebrated artist, known for her impressive accolades, including an EGOT, was part of the original cast from the show’s second season, which aired in 2012 and inspired this stage adaptation.
As Hudson took the stage, she created a buzz in the crowd, expressing her admiration for the talented cast led by Robyn Hurder and Caroline Bowman, who portray roles made famous by Megan Hilty and Katharine McPhee in the series. After some heartfelt words, the show’s songwriters, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, invited Hudson to share a few notes from "I Can’t Let Go," a song originally written for her character.
"You all are amazing stars!" Hudson exclaimed, showering the performers with praise. She highlighted how the performance was inspirational, making everyone want to be part of such a vibrant Broadway scene.
Hudson, who previously missed the musical’s premiere on April 10 due to her commitments in Los Angeles, had expressed her support on social media, regretting her absence but sending love to the cast and crew.
The musical Smash features beloved songs from the show’s original soundtrack, bringing to life the story of a fictional Marilyn Monroe musical named Bombshell. Unlike the TV series, the stage version introduces changes, including outsmarting the intense rivalry between two lead characters.
Directed by Tony Award-winner Susan Stroman, the show promises an exciting blend of talent and creativity. With its charm and engaging storyline, Smash is already nominated for two Tony Awards, solidifying its standing in the competitive world of Broadway.
Tickets are currently available for those eager to experience the magic of Smash live.
