Apple TV+ to Adapt Jennette McCurdy’s Memoir into New Series
LOS ANGELES — Apple TV+ is set to transform Jennette McCurdy’s bestselling memoir, "I’m Glad My Mom Died," into a new series. Jennifer Aniston will star in a role inspired by McCurdy’s own mother.
The upcoming 10-episode dramedy will be co-written by McCurdy and producer Ari Katcher, who will also take on the roles of co-showrunners and executive producers alongside Aniston.
McCurdy began her acting career at the young age of 8, gaining fame as a co-star on Nickelodeon’s "iCarly." She later reprised her role in the spinoff "Sam & Cat." Her memoir reveals the painful experiences she endured, stating that she faced emotional and physical abuse from her mother during her childhood.
The series will explore the complex and codependent relationship between a young actress in a hit kids’ show and her mother, described as narcissistic. Specific casting details for the role of the young star have yet to be revealed, but the character is said to be 18 years old.
In her memoir, released in August 2022, McCurdy candidly discusses how therapy helped her come to terms with her mother’s death from cancer in 2013. She noted the conflicting emotions that surfaced after her mother’s passing, expressing a mix of anger and sadness.
McCurdy elaborated, “It’s complicated. I felt compassion and sympathy but also rage. It’s a messy situation when the love you experienced was abusive.”
Her book also reflects on the challenges of managing fame while dealing with her mother’s illness, illustrating heart-wrenching moments that contradicted her public image.
Aniston’s involvement with the project comes after her successful partnership with Apple TV+ on "The Morning Show," which is gearing up for its fourth season premiere on September 17.
