CINCINNATI — Cory Bowman, inspired by his half-brother JD Vance’s recent inauguration, has decided to run for mayor of Cincinnati. After watching Vance take office as vice president, Bowman felt compelled to step into the political arena himself, aiming to make a positive impact on his city.
“I thought this would be a great way to help impact the city in another realm,” said Bowman, who is also active in his community through an evangelical church and a coffee shop he opened. At 36 years old, Bowman’s background in economics and administration positions him to address various local issues that he believes could be improved upon.
Cincinnati’s current mayor, Aftab Pureval, a rising star in the Democratic Party, is seeking reelection. He won his last race in 2021 with almost 66% of the vote. Bowman’s motivation to run is partly driven by his concern that Pureval was running unopposed, prompting him to present another choice for voters.
Cincinnati’s mayoral races are nonpartisan, with the top two candidates advancing to the general election in November. Bowman hopes his candidacy will provide an alternative vision for Cincinnati voters. “I believe it’s important for Cincinnati voters to have different options and voices,” Pureval commented, emphasizing the value of a competitive election.
Bowman has roots in the area, having grown up on a farm in nearby Hamilton. His family always regarded Cincinnati as home, despite frequent relocations due to his father’s work as a custom home builder. After obtaining his degree in economics and business administration from Miami University in Ohio, he returned to Cincinnati to establish The River Church with his wife.
Though he is related to JD Vance, who had a tumultuous childhood and has since built a successful career, Bowman insists that he does not rely on his brother’s political standing for his campaign. “He’s my brother, but he’s not a political counselor to me,” Bowman affirmed. Vance is not actively involved in Bowman’s campaign, and Bowman has not sought his endorsement.
In his campaign, Bowman has emphasized issues such as opposed sanctuary city status, ensuring children’s safety, and improving infrastructure like snow removal and pothole repairs. Despite his grassroots approach, one voter expressed skepticism about supporting a candidate connected to a prominent political figure, reflecting concerns about bringing chaos to local politics.
As the race heats up, Bowman presents himself as a candidate focused on true community engagement, hoping to bridge gaps and enhance the quality of life for Cincinnati residents.
