The expenditure for the Expo surged nearly double the original estimate to 235 billion yen (approximately $1.64 billion), raising concerns among Japanese citizens about taxpayer money.
As preparations unfolded, some countries faced delays, with their pavilions not fully ready, while others, like Russia, chose not to participate. Ticket sales have also been slower than expected, with 9 million advance tickets sold, falling short of the target of 14 million. The organizers are hopeful for a turnout of over 280 million visitors throughout the Expo’s duration until October 13.
During the opening ceremony, Emperor Naruhito recalled his visit to the 1970 Expo, recalling his excitement over new technologies. He expressed hope that this year’s event would inspire children to learn more about global cultures and future societies through innovative technologies and sustainability efforts.
