Jamie Lee Curtis Connects With Real-Life Story Behind ‘The Lost Bus’
At the recent Toronto International Film Festival, Jamie Lee Curtis made a striking appearance as a producer of the new film The Lost Bus, which features Matthew McConaughey and America Ferrera. The movie, set to hit theaters on September 19 and stream on Apple TV+ starting October 3, tells the inspiring tale of a bus driver and schoolteacher who heroically transported 22 children to safety during the catastrophic 2018 Camp Fire in California.
During the premiere, Curtis shared her unique connection with the real-life schoolteacher, Mary Ludwig, portrayed by Ferrera. Curtis recalled that Ludwig was initially hesitant when they first spoke about making a film based on her life. “When you’re a producer calling someone to say you want to tell their story, there can be concerns,” Curtis noted, acknowledging the challenge of being from Hollywood telling a true story.
Ludwig revealed to Curtis, “You know, we have a weird connection.” As it turns out, Curtis’s late mother, Janet Leigh, had once dated Ludwig’s father in Merced, California. This surprising link added an unexpected layer to the film’s creation for Curtis.
In addition, McConaughey’s character, bus driver Kevin McKay, also expressed his connection to Curtis. He shared that the last time he went out with his mother before the fires, they had seen Curtis’s film Halloween. Curtis described this encounter as a “moment of trust” that came from something much larger.
Curtis conveyed her pride in being part of a project showcasing the strength and resilience of individuals who face life’s challenges. She emphasized the importance of the film being told by skilled director Paul Greengrass and producer Jason Blum, calling the experience a thrilling journey of connections.
The Lost Bus also features Yul Vazquez, Ashlie Atkinson, and McConaughey’s family, including his mother and son, who attended the premiere alongside his wife.
As this remarkable story of courage approaches its release, it aims to inspire viewers with its heartwarming message of hope and community.
