Liberal Money Flows to New York’s Top Prosecutor
New York Attorney General Letitia James has received significant financial support from liberal financier George Soros and his family, raising questions about the influence of outside money in state politics. According to public records, the Soros family has contributed over $71,000 to James’ campaigns since 2019, with the most recent donation of $31,000 earmarked for her 2026 reelection bid.
George Soros himself donated $18,000 in July 2024, while his daughter-in-law, Jennifer Soros, added $13,000 in May of the same year. These contributions have sparked criticism, particularly from those who believe Soros’s political agenda is not in line with traditional American values.
Michael Henry, the Republican candidate set to challenge James in the 2026 election, voiced strong concerns about the donations. He argued that Soros has a history of funding radical left-wing causes, which often leads to instability and disorder. Henry pointed to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg as another example of a politician who has benefited from Soros’s financial backing, suggesting that James may be pursuing similar ideological goals.
Henry stated, “George Soros has spent years financing the radical left’s most extreme projects, and the outcome is almost always the same: instability and disorder that is destroying our state. We saw it with Alvin Bragg, so no one should be surprised that he is heavily backing Letitia James’ ideological crusades and political vendettas that put New Yorkers’ safety on the back burner. When the same donor who funds chaos underwrites New York’s top law enforcement office, the results speak for themselves.”
Beyond direct campaign contributions, Soros has also channeled substantial funds into organizations that support James’s political ambitions. For instance, he has donated $23.7 million to the Working Families Party since 2016. This far-left progressive party endorsed James during her 2022 reelection campaign, further solidifying the connection between her and Soros’s network of influence.
Concerns about the influence of wealthy donors like Soros on political campaigns are not new. Critics argue that large contributions can give special interests an outsized voice in government, potentially shaping policy decisions in ways that benefit the donor rather than the public good. The donations to James’s campaign have fueled these concerns, with some suggesting that her actions as attorney general may be influenced by the financial support she has received.
The role of an attorney general is to uphold the law and ensure equal justice for all citizens. When a top prosecutor receives significant funding from individuals with clear political agendas, it raises questions about whether those agendas are influencing the pursuit of justice. The perception of impartiality is crucial for maintaining public trust in the legal system, and large donations from partisan actors can undermine that trust.
As the 2026 election approaches, the financial support James has received from Soros is likely to remain a point of contention. Supporters of James may argue that the donations are simply a reflection of shared values and a commitment to progressive causes. However, critics will continue to raise concerns about the potential for undue influence and the need for greater transparency in campaign finance. The debate highlights the ongoing tension between the right to political expression and the need to ensure a fair and impartial legal system.
Ultimately, voters will need to weigh the evidence and decide whether they believe James can serve as an independent and impartial attorney general, despite the financial support she has received from politically active donors. The integrity of the legal system depends on the public’s confidence in its fairness, and transparency in campaign finance is essential for maintaining that confidence.
