During a hearing on Capitol Hill, former special counsel Jack Smith faced tough questions from Republicans about his investigation into President Trump.
Representative Darrell Issa questioned Smith about his team’s request for “tolling records.” These records show phone numbers and call times. Issa and other Republicans are concerned that getting these records was like spying on members of Congress.
Issa asked Smith if he told the court that he was seeking records related to conversations between the Speaker of the House and the President. Smith replied that his office did not spy on anyone.
Smith defended his actions by saying that getting tolling records is normal practice. He also said that Trump was responsible for the phone calls that led to the investigation. Smith noted that if Trump had called Democrat senators, they would have looked at those records instead.
