Governor Ron DeSantis has appointed Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody to take over Senator Marco Rubio’s seat in the U.S. Senate. This change comes as Rubio is currently in the process of being confirmed as President-elect Donald Trump’s secretary of state.
At 49 years old and a mother of two, Moody has been serving as Florida’s attorney general since 2019. Before this role, she worked as a federal prosecutor and a circuit court judge. As a Republican, she has been a strong opponent of the Affordable Care Act (commonly known as Obamacare) and has fought against restoring voting rights to felons and the legalization of marijuana.
Moody has expressed her commitment to reducing government regulations and cutting down the federal budget. “The only way to return this country to the people is by ensuring a strong Congress that does its job,” she stated. Moody emphasized her dedication to the American people. “I will bring my experiences and my faith in God to the Senate. And as a mother of school-aged children, I aim to contribute positively to their future,” she said.
Initially, it was thought that Lara Trump, Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law, might fill the vacated seat. However, she recently withdrew her name from consideration. Moody will need to run for election in 2026 to keep her seat, with House Representative Cory Mills already announcing his bid for it.
While in office, Moody has closely aligned with Governor DeSantis’s initiatives. This included a lawsuit against the Justice Department regarding its actions against Florida’s investigations, as well as a strong legal stance against Biden administration policies regarding healthcare for minors.
Moody’s track record suggests she will advocate for conservative values and work to counteract policies she views as overreaches by the federal government. As she steps into this new role, many Florida residents and conservatives are hopeful for her influence in Washington.
