Intel’s CEO Lip-Bu Tan has asserted that he operates under strong legal and ethical standards following remarks from former President Donald Trump suggesting his resignation. On Thursday, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to voice concerns, labeling Tan as “highly CONFLICTED” and insisting he must step down immediately.
This statement from Trump followed a letter from Senator Tom Cotton, who expressed worries over Tan’s connections to semiconductor companies allegedly linked to the Chinese Communist Party and the People’s Liberation Army. Cotton asked Intel’s board if Tan had severed ties with these firms to eliminate any potential conflicts of interest.
As of now, it remains unclear whether Tan, who became Intel’s CEO in March, has divested from those companies. The ongoing economic and political tension between the U.S. and China increasingly centers on crucial technologies such as computer chips and artificial intelligence, which are set to influence future economies and military capabilities.
In response to these developments, Intel issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to U.S. national and economic security, highlighting its efforts aligned with the “America First” agenda promoted by the previous administration.
Tan addressed these concerns directly in a message to employees, emphasizing that he has always adhered to correct practices despite the circulating misinformation regarding his past roles at Walden International and Cadence Design Systems. He also noted that Intel has been in dialogue with the Trump administration to clarify facts surrounding the issue.
“I fully share the President’s commitment to advancing U.S. national and economic security and appreciate his leadership in these areas,” Tan stated. The company’s stock experienced a slight increase in premarket trading on Friday following these developments.
