New Jersey Governor Faces Criticism Over Immigration Monitoring Plan
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill, a Democrat, is facing backlash from conservatives and the White House over her plan to create a system for people to report sightings of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers.
The governor wants people to take videos of ICE agents and upload them to a special online spot. She says this will help keep an eye on what ICE is doing.
But the White House doesn’t agree with this plan. A spokesperson said that if the governor put as much effort into finding dangerous illegal immigrants as she does into watching ICE, New Jersey would be safer. The White House also pointed out that attacks on ICE officers have gone up a lot because of what some Democrats have said.
A Republican leader in New Jersey, John DiMaio, also spoke out against the governor’s idea. He said it makes things more dangerous for everyone and keeps making it harder for police to do their jobs. DiMaio mentioned that ICE has arrested some very bad people in New Jersey, including sex offenders who hurt kids. He thinks the governor’s plan sends the wrong message, making it seem like enforcing the law is something to be ashamed of.
Governor Sherrill’s spokesperson says she is trying to protect the people of New Jersey from the government doing too much.
