A man from North Carolina has been convicted in the tragic death of his wife, who suffered neglect in their home. Louis Kornhaber, 70, from Charlotte, faced a jury regarding the circumstances of his wife, Bonnie Kornhaber, 66, who died in 2021.
The case came to light after it was revealed that Bonnie returned home from a hospital visit in October 2020. At that time, her husband secured her to her wheelchair. Unfortunately, she fell out of the wheelchair and remained on the floor for six to eight months without any help. Kornhaber admitted he did not call emergency services because he was embarrassed by the state of their home.
On June 4, 2021, Bonnie expressed that she was having difficulty breathing. Instead of seeking help, her husband opted to watch television in another room. A few hours later, when he returned, he found her unresponsive. He eventually called 911, but it was too late; when the responders arrived, they discovered Bonnie had died in distressing conditions, surrounded by trash and spoiled food.
Investigators described the couple’s home as a “hoarder house,” and Bonnie was found in extremely poor condition, covered in waste and suffering from serious sores on her body.
After a lengthy trial, the jury found Kornhaber guilty of second-degree murder and neglect of a disabled adult leading to severe injury. He has been sentenced to a prison term of at least 7 years and 10 months, with a maximum of 10 years and 5 months for his actions.
