An Israeli airstrike in Yemen reportedly killed a top Houthi military leader in August, raising concerns amid ongoing tensions in the region.
Maj. Gen. Muhammad Abdul Karim al-Ghamari, the Houthi chief of staff, was killed in the strike, according to officials. Al-Ghamari had been sanctioned by the United Nations for his role in the Yemen conflict.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that al-Ghamari died from wounds suffered in the attack.
Al-Ghamari was considered by the UN to be a key figure in directing Houthi military actions that threatened stability in Yemen and neighboring Saudi Arabia. The U.S. Treasury had also sanctioned him in 2021, citing his role in attacks impacting Yemeni civilians.
