A senior aide in Representative Sara Jacobs’ office experienced an armed carjacking in a bustling Washington, D.C. neighborhood on Friday afternoon, as reported by the Metropolitan Police Department.
Metro Police announced the arrest of two individuals connected to the carjacking that took place in a Harris Teeter parking lot in the Navy Yard area. The police report indicated that the stolen items included the staffer’s government-issued iPhone, MacBook, ID, and Capitol parking pass. Jacobs’ office confirmed that the devices were swiftly wiped for security.
The incident occurred around 12:08 p.m. when the suspects approached the staffer as they got out of their car, demanding the keys. When the victim resisted, one suspect displayed a handgun and took the keys before fleeing in the staffer’s vehicle.
Officers later recovered the stolen car and a firearm and arrested a 15-year-old male suspect from Washington, D.C., charged with armed carjacking, and a 14-year-old male from Maryland, charged with unlawful possession of a handgun and unauthorized vehicle use. As of the latest updates, the police are still searching for two additional suspects whose images were captured on surveillance cameras.
Navy Yard is known for being a lively neighborhood near the U.S. Capitol and home to the Washington Nationals baseball team. However, despite its transformation over the past decade, concerns regarding crime in the area have been raised.
In related news, transportation safety has been a hot topic, with reports surfacing of incidents involving violence in public transit spaces. President Trump has been vocal about the necessity of addressing crime in Washington, pledging to make the capital a safer place during his campaign appearances.
“We’re cleaning up our city. We’re cleaning up this great capital,” Trump asserted, emphasizing a commitment to reducing crime levels in the region.
The Jacobs aide has not made any comments regarding the incident.
