In Pennsylvania, a shocking discovery has left a community in disbelief. Police say that Jessica Mauthe, a 39-year-old woman, secretly gave birth and hid the bodies of four babies.
The remains were found on September 13th in a house in Cadogan Township, where Mauthe had recently been evicted. One baby was found in a closet, and the others were in bags in the attic, according to court papers.
Neighbors who often looked after Mauthe’s two young sons, ages 6 and 8, said they had no idea she was ever pregnant. One neighbor described the situation as “evil” and said the whole neighborhood is in shock.
Mauthe reportedly told police that one baby was born in the toilet about a year ago. She said the baby made noises for a few minutes before she wrapped it in towels until it stopped. She admitted to other similar incidents, according to reports.
Autopsies have been done, and investigators are waiting for the results.
Another local resident described a bad smell inside the house. She had been helping the landlord look for cats after Mauthe was evicted.
Neighbors said that Mauthe didn’t have much support, but they tried to help her and her children.
Police are planning to look at Mauthe’s medical records and talk to her friends, co-workers, and her husband, who is in jail.
Mauthe is facing charges, including homicide and concealing the death of a child. She is currently being held without bail, and more charges are expected.
