A man in Massachusetts is facing charges after his elderly parents died in a fire at their home earlier this week.
The victims, Venture Hazard, 76, and Donald Hazard, 83, were found dead in their North Adams home. Police say their 44-year-old son, Darius Hazard, has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Darius Hazard is accused of assaulting his parents, pouring gasoline in their house, and setting it on fire before leaving. He has been charged with arson and has pleaded not guilty. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer at this time.
According to reports, Darius told police that he was having trouble dealing with his mother’s health issues. He said that he attacked his parents after becoming upset while helping his mother after a fall.
As he left the burning house, Darius said he could hear his parents calling for help. Neighbors reported the fire after seeing smoke, and police found the couple dead inside.
Darius’s coworkers told police he didn’t show up to work that day, which was unusual. He was later found and arrested.
People in the community are shocked by the tragedy. A neighbor said the family had been a pillar in the community for many years and were well-loved. A family friend expressed hope that Darius would get the help he needs and that answers would be found.
