A man in North Carolina is facing serious charges after allegedly shooting a police officer who was responding to a report of an armed individual at a local supermarket. Tarell Isaac McMillian, 34, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Officer Michael Horan of Greensboro. The incident occurred on Monday at a Food Lion store. McMillian is currently held without bail.
In addition to the murder charge, McMillian is dealing with several charges related to a vehicle chase that ended with his arrest in Duplin County, which is about 150 miles southeast of Greensboro. As of now, police have stated that they are not looking for any additional suspects in this case.
Officer Horan was shot shortly before noon while answering an emergency call at the supermarket. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is currently conducting an inquiry into the details surrounding the shooting.
Horan joined the Greensboro Police Department in 2017 and became a sworn officer in early 2018. He also served in the Coast Guard since 2000, reflecting a commitment to public service, according to his LinkedIn profile. Milford J. Harris, the police deputy chief, praised Horan’s performance, describing him as an excellent officer with a stellar reputation in the community.
North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper expressed his condolences on social media, emphasizing Horan’s bravery in protecting the community and labeling the incident as an act of senseless violence. He acknowledged the officer’s dedicated service and offered thoughts to Horan’s family and colleagues.
Food Lion has announced that the store will remain closed as the investigation continues and is offering support to its affected employees.
