During a visit to the New York state Capitol, Tom Homan, former Acting Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under President Trump, issued a stern warning to jurisdictions that declare themselves as “sanctuaries” for migrants. Homan stated that these areas should “get out of the way” if they do not want to see more ICE agents working in their communities.
The state of New York has laws that restrict local law enforcement from fully cooperating with ICE. For instance, these laws prevent police from holding individuals solely based on their immigration status. Another controversial law, known as the “Green Light Law,” permits undocumented immigrants to acquire valid driver’s licenses.
While speaking alongside Republican lawmakers in Albany, Homan emphasized his commitment to prioritizing the deportation of serious offenders, criticizing policies like New York’s that hinder cooperation with federal immigration authorities. He expressed concern that these sanctuary policies endanger federal agents and communities alike.
Homan urged local law enforcement to allow ICE agents access to jails voluntarily, indicating that the Trump administration would not be deterred by sanctuary policies in its efforts to deport individuals in violation of immigration laws. He stated, “You’re not going to stop us, New York state. If you don’t change the sanctuary status, get out of the way. We’re going to do our job.”
He also took aim at New York’s Governor Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, accusing her of sending mixed signals on immigration policy. He remarked that while she claims to support the deportation of dangerous criminals, she simultaneously places obstacles in the way of such actions.
Homan argued that releasing individuals deemed a safety threat back into the community is reckless. He pointed out that non-cooperation with federal authorities ultimately necessitates a stronger law enforcement presence on the ground.
Assemblyman Matt Slater, who stood with Homan during his visit, conveyed his appreciation for the federal government’s focus on national security and public safety. He affirmed that sanctuary policies protecting criminal illegal immigrants would no longer be tolerated.
As of this writing, Governor Hochul has not responded to inquiries regarding her stance on these issues.
