In Arizona, five children will spend the holidays without their mom after a tragic event.
Selena Felix, who was 30 years old, was found dead near her house in Phoenix early on December 22. Police say she had been shot several times.
Officers looking into the case found a car that seemed suspicious. When they checked the license plate, they learned that the driver, Alexis Torres, 23, had been stopped for a traffic violation about an hour before.
When police tried to stop Torres again, he ran away and hid in a nearby house. As police tried to talk to him, they heard a gunshot. Torres was found dead inside from a self-inflicted wound.
Police also found a 3-year-old child in Torres’s car.
It took another hour for police to connect Torres to Selena’s death. It wasn’t until a family member reported the child missing that police realized the toddler in the car was Selena’s son.
Investigators believe Torres took the child from Selena and killed her because of a disagreement about custody.
Selena’s family described her as a “loving mother, a caring sister, and a friend to many.” Her five children are having a hard time understanding why their mother is gone.
The police are still working on the case.
