Pope Leo XIV Appoints New Archbishop for New York
VATICAN CITY – Pope Leo XIV has chosen Bishop Ronald Hicks of Joliet, Illinois, to be the next Archbishop of New York. This is seen as an important decision for the Catholic Church in the United States.
Hicks will take over from Cardinal Timothy Dolan, who is retiring. Cardinal Dolan is a well-known conservative figure in the Church. Before leaving, Dolan created a $300 million fund to help people who were hurt by past abuse cases.
At a recent press conference, Hicks spoke about the importance of protecting children and helping those who have been hurt. He said the Church must always work to prevent abuse and be open and honest about what has happened.
Cardinal Dolan had to offer his resignation earlier this year, as is normal when a bishop turns 75. The Vatican often waits to make big changes like this, especially when there are still legal issues to settle.
This change in leadership is a new chapter for the Catholic Church in America, especially with Pope Leo, who was born in Chicago, now leading the Church.
Hicks, who is 58, grew up near where Pope Leo did. Before becoming a bishop, he worked in El Salvador, helping run an orphanage. He said he is looking forward to getting to know the people of New York.
Hicks is known for being thoughtful and caring. Those who have worked with him say he is a good choice for New York.
In the past, Hicks has spoken out in support of immigrants. He once shared a message from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops that talked about standing in solidarity with all people.
Hicks met Pope Leo last year and said he was impressed by his desire to build bridges and connect with people.
Before becoming a bishop, Hicks worked as a priest and teacher in Chicago. He then became a bishop in Joliet in 2020.
The Archdiocese of New York is one of the largest in the country, with many Catholics.
Cardinal Dolan is a well-known figure in New York. He has often spoken about his views, including his belief that some Democrats have turned away from Catholics. He also welcomed people from all walks of life.
Dolan has connections to the current administration. He hosted a dinner that raises money for Catholic charities.
One of the first big jobs for Hicks will be to oversee the abuse settlement fund. This fund will help pay for settlements for many past abuse claims.
Hicks has experience dealing with the issue of abuse. In the past, the Joliet diocese was criticized for how it handled abuse cases. A report found that some leaders had moved abusers around and not taken responsibility for their actions.
