In a heartbreaking incident that occurred on Christmas night, a mother from Queens was tragically killed after being struck by two vehicles on her way to the grocery store. Antonina Freycinet, a 45-year-old mother of three, was crossing 111th Avenue near 158th Street in Jamaica when she was hit by a motorist who fled the scene, according to officials.
The accident happened around 9:30 p.m. and was witnessed by her eldest son, Andrew Dasrath, who immediately rushed to her side. Describing the moment, Dasrath, 20, recounted, “I ran out and saw her and I was like what the hell? I was just holding her, trying to make sure she didn’t move too much.” He didn’t realize his mother was the victim until he saw her severely injured.
Dasrath did everything he could to comfort her, urging her to stay calm and breathe while they waited for the ambulance. Unfortunately, despite his efforts, Freycinet succumbed to her injuries shortly after arriving at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center.
This tragic event unfolded just after the family had shared a quiet Christmas celebration, which included a cake and gift from Freycinet’s youngest child, a 7-year-old daughter. Dasrath shared how his little sister had bought some Christmas candy and made a cake for their mother. “She’s 7,” he said, underlining the innocence of a child caught up in a devastating moment.
The family’s nightmare began when Freycinet stepped out to buy drinks for the family gathering. Described by her son as a “loving, caring person,” Freycinet was originally from Haiti and was known for her gentle and kind spirit. “She was quiet and easy-going. She always just wanted to do the right thing,” Dasrath remarked.
This loss hits hard, especially considering the family’s past. Dasrath’s father was also involved in a serious car accident several years ago due to faulty tires and now resides in a nursing home. The pain of losing another parent is something that no child should have to endure.
As the investigation into the incident continues, police are still searching for the driver of the first car that struck Freycinet and then fled the scene. Dasrath expressed his anger and heartbreak, urging the responsible driver to come forward. “If I could see that driver – the first one who hit her – I would say you should have stopped. You should have been more careful! Turn yourself in!” he pleaded.
While the driver of the second vehicle, a 64-year-old man in a Ford Expedition, remained at the scene, he did not face charges. It was reported that he may not have realized he had hit Freycinet as she lay injured in the street.
This tragic incident raises important questions about road safety and the responsibilities of drivers to remain vigilant and empathetic. It’s crucial for the community to ensure that justice is served for families impacted by such senseless tragedies. The loss of a loved one, particularly during a time meant for family gatherings and joy, serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of valuing each moment with our loved ones.
As authorities work to gather more information and find the hit-and-run driver, our thoughts go out to Freycinet’s family during this difficult time. The outpouring of grief and support from the community highlights how deeply this tragedy has affected those who knew and loved her. It is in times like these that we must come together as a community, supporting one another in the face of unimaginable loss.
