Kamala Harris Says Buttigieg Was Almost Her Running Mate
In her upcoming book, former Vice President Kamala Harris shares that Pete Buttigieg was her top choice for a running mate in the last presidential election. However, she felt that choosing him “was too big of a risk.”
Harris explains that Buttigieg, who is openly gay, “would have been an ideal partner – if I were a straight white man.” She worried that America wasn’t ready to accept a ticket with a woman, a Black woman, and a Black woman married to a Jewish man.
Ultimately, Harris picked Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. The pair lost the election to Donald Trump and JD Vance in November.
In her book, Harris notes that Buttigieg had qualities that appealed to a broad range of voters. She says he could “frame liberal arguments in a way that makes it possible for conservatives to hear them.”
Harris also states that she likes Buttigieg and enjoys working with him. She considers him and his husband, Chasten, to be friends.
Harris and Buttigieg both sought the Democratic nomination for president in 2020, but Joe Biden won the nomination instead.
Harris’s book, “107 Days,” comes out next Tuesday. It promises a behind-the-scenes look at the presidential campaign.
