In Harlem, New York, a sad event happened. A 47-year-old mother named Carmen Lopez was found dead in her apartment building on Monday morning.
Police say that Ms. Lopez had been stabbed multiple times. They found her in the hallway of her building on West 129th Street around 4:25 a.m. She was quickly taken to a nearby hospital, but sadly, she could not be saved.
The next day, police arrested a 41-year-old man named Luis Marquez. He is now charged with Ms. Lopez’s murder. The police have not yet said why they think he did it.
People who lived in the building said that Ms. Lopez was a kind woman and a loving mother to four children. They were shocked and saddened by her death. Some neighbors mentioned they believed she was attacked just after getting off the elevator.
Ms. Lopez’s sister said that her family is heartbroken. They loved her very much and don’t know how to go on without her.
According to news reports, investigators believe Ms. Lopez knew her attacker. One report said that a man, thought to be her ex-boyfriend, went to a hospital with cuts on his hands. He was wearing clothes that matched what was found at the scene of the crime.
A worker in the building said he heard Ms. Lopez yell, “Stop, Luis,” before she fell to the ground. Another neighbor described seeing a lot of blood.
After the tragedy, people in the community put candles outside the building to remember Ms. Lopez. A group that works to stop violence also came to offer help to the residents.
