Michael Alexander, a 21-year-old American citizen with dual U.S.-Israeli nationality, was freed from captivity in the Gaza Strip on Monday. His release came after more than 580 days held by Hamas. Israeli Defense Forces units were involved in his rescue, and he is now receiving medical care at a facility in Re’im, Israel.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke about the emotional reunion, stating, “This is a very emotional moment—Edan has returned home. We embrace him and his family.” He credited military and diplomatic efforts, particularly mentioning the role of former President Donald Trump, in securing Alexander’s release.
The joy of the Alexander family was echoed in their hometown of Tenafly, New Jersey, where a crowd gathered to celebrate his return. Many residents applauded and expressed relief and happiness upon hearing the news.
Following the release, Trump congratulated Alexander’s family on social media, expressing his excitement over the outcome. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also commented, emphasizing a commitment to securing the release of all Americans held abroad.
Hamas stated that this release was part of efforts to facilitate a ceasefire and improve conditions for those in Gaza. As news spread, applause erupted in Tenafly, where approximately 3,000 people gathered to show their support.
Netanyahu’s collaboration with U.S. officials, including Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff, was instrumental in this process. Alexander’s family, who faced tremendous worry during his absence, is now being supported by military professionals as he undergoes further care for his well-being.
Alexander volunteered for military service with the IDF and was reportedly abducted on October 7, during a time when he had the choice to go home but instead chose to stay and fulfill his duties. His release brings a mix of joy and determination among families of other hostages still in captivity, as they hope for the safe return of their loved ones.
The news of Edan’s release represents a critical step not just for him and his family but also underscores the ongoing efforts to resolve hostage situations and improve the safety of Americans abroad.
