National Guard Deployments Considered for Several Cities in 2026
Following President Trump’s actions in 2025, which saw the National Guard deployed to several major cities to help ensure safety and security, similar measures may be considered for other cities in 2026.
In 2025, the National Guard was sent to cities like Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, the Chicago area, Memphis, and New Orleans. These deployments aimed to protect federal buildings, support law enforcement, and maintain order in areas experiencing unrest.
Here’s a look at some cities where National Guard deployments might be considered in the coming year:
Chicago: Despite legal challenges, the Trump administration remains committed to working to protect the American public. A White House spokesperson stated that the President intends to enforce immigration laws and protect federal personnel. The administration is likely to continue pursuing the option of deploying the National Guard to Chicago to address ongoing safety concerns.
St. Louis: President Trump has mentioned St. Louis as a city in need of federal assistance due to high crime rates. Speaking about the situation in Memphis, he stated, “We have to save St. Louis,” grouping it with other cities facing challenges with violent crime and strained law enforcement resources.
New York: While President Trump has expressed hope that New York City can improve its situation independently, the possibility of National Guard deployment remains if the city’s safety and security deteriorate. This comes after socialist Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s rise to power. Despite a publicized meeting with Trump where the two seemed to work through their differences, the option remains on the table.
Baltimore: President Trump has stated that he would send the National Guard to Baltimore if Maryland Governor Wes Moore requests help to address the city’s high crime rates. This follows an invitation from Moore for Trump to visit Baltimore and discuss public safety strategies.
California Cities: Despite opposition from California’s pro-sanctuary leadership, President Trump has indicated a willingness to send the National Guard to cities like Los Angeles, Oakland, and San Francisco if necessary. The President has expressed concern about the state of these cities, stating that they have been “destroyed” by Democratic policies and that action may be needed to restore order.
