Greenville County Set for June 25 Runoffs
Greenville County is gearing up for runoffs on June 25, following a competitive primary held earlier this month. Candidates are competing for various positions, including spots in Congress and the County Council.
Runoffs occur when no candidate receives more than half of the votes in a party’s primary election. According to the South Carolina Election Commission, voter turnout in Greenville County was just over 17% for the primaries. Interestingly, even those who did not participate in the primaries can vote in the runoffs.
Voters are not required to be registered to a specific party to take part in that party’s runoff but must choose one party to vote for on election day.
On election night, results will be made available precinct by precinct following the closure of polls, so be sure to check back after 7 p.m. on June 25 for the latest updates.
Key Races Heading to Runoff
U.S. House of Representatives, District 3 (Republican)
- Candidates: Sherri Biggs vs. Mark Burns
This contest for the seat vacated by incumbent U.S. Rep. Jeff Duncan has narrowed down to two contenders. Sherri Biggs, currently an Air National Guard lieutenant colonel endorsed by Governor Henry McMaster, is running for her first political office. In contrast, Mark Burns, a Christian nationalist and a spiritual advisor to former President Donald Trump, is making his third bid for Congress.
Senate District 6 (Republican)
- Candidates: Ben Carper vs. Jason Elliott
The race for the Senate seat has intensified, with Elliott’s camp calling for an investigation into Carper, alleging that he may not reside in the district he’s campaigning for. Carper refutes these claims, stating that his residency is legitimate.
Senate District 12 (Republican)
- Candidates: Lee Bright vs. Roger Allen Nutt
Lee Bright, a former state senator, and Roger Nutt, a current state representative, have emerged from a larger field to face each other in this runoff. Given the nature of the district, the winner is likely to secure the Senate seat.
House District 28 (Republican)
- Candidates: Chris Huff vs. Kerri J. Smith
In this race, retired pastor Chris Huff will challenge Kerri Smith, the regional president for Self-Help Credit Union.
Greenville County Council District 20 (Republican)
- Candidates: Alex Reynolds vs. Steve Shaw
Incumbent Steve Shaw is squaring off against challenger Alex Reynolds, following a primary in which Shaw voted against a tax increase that altered council dynamics.
Greenville County Council District 22 (Republican)
- Candidates: Frank Farmer vs. Jay Rogers
Following Stan Tzouvelekas’s campaign for state Senate, Farmer and Rogers will compete for this council seat, as Farmer missed the outright majority needed to secure victory previously.
Greenville County Council District 25 (Democratic)
- Candidates: Ennis M. Fant vs. Derrick L. Quarles
Incumbent Ennis Fant is set for a runoff against Derrick Quarles in this council race, marking an important contest in the upcoming election.
As June 25 approaches, all eyes will be on these races, marking a significant day for candidates and voters in Greenville County.
