A prominent Senate Republican is raising concerns that the antiwar group Code Pink may need to register as a foreign agent due to potential ties to foreign governments, particularly China. Senator Charles Grassley, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, has written to FBI Director Kash Patel and Attorney General Pam Bondi, questioning whether the group and another organization, The People’s Forum, should comply with the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA).
Senator Grassley emphasized the importance of FARA in safeguarding American public policy from foreign influence. He noted that the law mandates transparency, requiring individuals acting on behalf of foreign governments to register with the Department of Justice.
Focusing on China, Grassley pointed out that the Chinese Communist Party has invested considerable resources—over $400 million since 2016—into shaping American political discourse. He brought attention to Neville Roy Singham, a wealthy U.S. citizen who has connections with both Code Pink and The People’s Forum, alleging that he has links to the Chinese government. Despite Singham’s denial of cooperation with Chinese officials, Grassley referenced a workshop in July 2023 where Singham was purportedly present to promote the Communist Party internationally.
Grassley’s letter also highlighted relationships between Code Pink, Singham, and his various endeavors, suggesting that the group has received significant contributions from entities connected to him. He cited instances where Code Pink has seemingly aligned with pro-China positions, including denial of reports regarding human rights abuses against the Uyghurs in China—an issue that goes against U.S. foreign policy interests.
In response to concerns raised, Code Pink denied any allegations of foreign funding or influence, asserting its independence as an organization focused on peace. A spokesperson stated that their goal is to represent a growing segment of the American populace advocating for peace rather than conflict.
Senator Grassley also scrutinized The People’s Forum, which has recently been involved in organizing protests, suggesting Singham is a key financial supporter of the group. He expressed worry about the implications these organizations may have for U.S. interests, pointing out their actions may align with China’s political agenda.
The senator’s call for further investigation aims to ensure that American political narratives are not distorted by foreign influences. Grassley advocates for accountability and transparency, reiterating that foreign lobbying and manipulation can undermine the interests of the American people.
