Kathy Ruemmler, a top lawyer at Goldman Sachs and former White House lawyer for President Obama, has announced she will resign. This decision comes after emails surfaced showing a close relationship between Ruemmler and Jeffrey Epstein.
Ruemmler will leave her position as Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel of Goldman Sachs on June 30, 2026.
In past statements, Ruemmler has called Epstein a “monster.” However, before Epstein’s second arrest in 2019 and later suicide in jail, emails show Ruemmler referred to Epstein as “Uncle Jeffrey.”
Before her resignation, a Goldman Sachs representative stated that Ruemmler “regrets ever knowing him.”
In her statement, Ruemmler said she was privileged to help oversee the firm’s legal and regulatory matters. She added that her responsibility is to put Goldman Sachs’ interests first.
Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon said he accepted her resignation and respects her decision.
Reports show Ruemmler received expensive gifts from Epstein after leaving the White House, these gifts included luxury handbags and a fur coat. These gifts were given after Epstein was already convicted of sex crimes in 2008 and was registered as a sex offender.
Gift-giving between clients and bankers is generally not accepted on Wall Street, especially high-end gifts that could cause a conflict of interest. Goldman Sachs requires employees to get preapproval before receiving gifts from clients.
