Nikki Glaser, who hosted the recent Golden Globe Awards, explained why she chose to keep politics out of the show.
During a chat on “The Howard Stern Show,” Glaser, who got good reviews for hosting the Golden Globes, said she felt political jokes just weren’t right for the occasion.
“It’s not funny,” she said. “It’s hard to strike the right tone.”
Glaser mentioned that comedian Steve Martin had written a joke about President Trump, but later suggested she skip it, saying it didn’t fit the mood.
The joke was about renaming the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., to include Trump’s name. Glaser agreed it was best to avoid the topic.
She also cut a joke about the nominees being mostly “short, white, old men,” feeling it was too “woke.”
However, Glaser did make a few jokes about current events. She mentioned the Epstein files, hinting at the celebrities involved without naming names.
She also poked fun at CBS News, which aired the Golden Globes, saying they were the “newest place to see BS news.” This was a reference to controversies at CBS and changes in leadership that have led some to question the network’s fairness.
One example of CBS’s shift is the hiring of Bari Weiss, who some see as bringing a more balanced viewpoint to the news.
In the end, the Golden Globes were noticeably less political than in previous years. The few political comments were mostly made by celebrities on the red carpet before the show. Some wore pins protesting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
