German Government Targets Extremist Group
The German government has made a significant move by banning the largest faction of the "Reich citizen" movement, a far-right organization that refers to itself as the “Kingdom of Germany.” This group has been accused of trying to weaken the nation’s democratic foundations. Authorities have also arrested four of the group’s leaders.
Early Tuesday, about 800 police officers carried out searches of various properties linked to the group and the homes of its key members.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated, “This group has effectively created a ‘counter-state’ in our country, establishing criminal networks that cannot be tolerated.” He emphasized the government’s commitment to combating threats to democracy, asserting, “We will take decisive action against those who undermine our democratic order.”
The so-called Reichsbürger movement does not recognize Germany as a legitimate state. Many followers believe the historical German Reich is still in existence, disregarding the nation’s government, laws, and legal institutions. They often refuse to pay taxes and other civic obligations.
The “Kingdom of Germany” was founded in 2012 by Peter Fitzek, one of those arrested this week, in the town of Wittenberg. The group claims around 6,000 followers, though official estimates suggest there are closer to 1,000 members. They position themselves as a “counter-state” seeking independence from the federal government.
Minister Dobrindt clarified that this action is not aimed at “harmless nostalgics” but rather at dismantling criminal operations. “That’s why it’s being banned today,” he said.
To prevent further funding of extremist activities, the group’s online platforms will be shut down, and their assets will be seized.
This isn’t the first time German authorities have taken action against the Reichsbürger movement. Earlier this year, police searched about 20 properties linked to individuals involved in this far-right scene, which has echoed elements of the QAnon movement in the United States.
In 2022, several individuals suspected of attempting to overthrow the German government faced trial, highlighting ongoing concerns regarding extremist threats in the country.
