A shop owner in Germany put up a sign saying Jews were not allowed in his store. This happened in the northern city of Flensburg.
Hans-Velten Reisch, who owns the store, said he put up the sign because he was angry about what he saw happening in the Gaza Strip. He said it wasn’t personal, but he just couldn’t stand Jews.
After the sign was put up, people in the government spoke out against it. They said it was wrong to discriminate against people because of their religion. One official said that such actions threaten the very principles of a free society.
The police told Reisch to take down the sign. The State Prosecutor is looking into the matter.
This incident is part of a bigger problem. There has been a rise in anti-Jewish incidents in that area. Last year, the number of these incidents went up a lot compared to the year before.
One of the officials speaking out against the shop owner, Gerhard Ulrich, has been accused of having anti-Jewish feelings himself. Some people say he has made comments that are unfair to Israel. They point to times when he criticized Israel’s security measures. These measures, like the security fence, are meant to protect Israelis from attacks. Some argue that these protections are necessary to preserve life and safety in the region.
