A family is seeking answers after the tragic deaths of two brothers found at the top of a mountain in Georgia. The remains of 19-year-old twins, Qaadir Malik Lewis and Naazir Rahim Lewis from Lawrenceville, were discovered on Bell Mountain in Hiawassee on March 8, as reported by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).
The discovery was made by hikers who notified the Towns County 911 Center around 11:05 a.m. local time. The local sheriff’s office then reached out to the GBI for assistance in the case.
Initial investigations suggest the twins, found with gunshot wounds, may have died in a murder-suicide. Autopsies are currently underway as the investigation continues.
The family is devastated by the news, having believed the twins were visiting friends in Boston at the time. They had booked a flight to Boston for March 7, just a day before their bodies were found in an unfamiliar area.
Family members discovered their plane tickets in their belongings and are desperate for clarification. “We want answers, we want to know exactly what happened to the twins,” said Samira Brawner, their aunt.
Qaadir and Naazir were very close, often described as inseparable. Their uncle, Rahim Brawner, mentioned he could not imagine them harming each other, stating they had never even had a fight.
The location where the twins were found, roughly 90 miles from their home, was unknown to their family. Samira expressed confusion over how the brothers ended up in the mountains, saying, “They don’t hike out there, they’ve never been out there.”
A GBI spokesperson confirmed that an autopsy has been completed, and they await further forensic test results. Another aunt, Yasmine Brawner, highlighted the strong support system surrounding her nephews, suggesting that “something happened” in the mountains that day.
Yasmine has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist with their funeral and memorial expenses. In response to the potential murder-suicide reports, she firmly stated, “They wouldn’t do this,” emphasizing the family’s loving background and the brothers’ aspirations for the future, including starting their own clothing line.
Yasmine voiced the need for further investigation into the tragic events that took place on Bell Mountain and called for support to share their story.
