Former Congressman George Santos Begins Prison Sentence for Fraud
Former U.S. Representative George Santos posted a dramatic goodbye on social media just hours before starting his federal prison term for fraud and identity theft.
In a heartfelt message, Santos reflected on his political journey, saying, “From the halls of Congress to the chaos of cable news, what a ride it’s been! To my supporters: you made this wild political experience worth it. To my critics: thanks for the attention.”
Santos is set to begin serving an 87-month sentence after pleading guilty to serious charges, including wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. He was sentenced in April and is also required to pay nearly $374,000 in restitution.
The former congressman’s legal troubles followed a thorough investigation into his actions, which included manipulating campaign finance rules and stealing identities to fund both campaign and personal expenses. Authorities stated that Santos even targeted vulnerable individuals, including elderly donors, to steal their credit information.
His actions drew condemnation from legal officials, who emphasized the need to combat public corruption. Santos’s behavior led to him being expelled from Congress, marking him as one of only six members to face such a serious consequence in American history.
Despite the situation, Santos continues to make appearances online and plans to stay engaged with his supporters. He stated he may be leaving the spotlight for now but assured his followers that “legends never truly exit.”
Unless granted a pardon, he is expected to remain behind bars until at least early 2032. He has reportedly sought clemency from former President Donald Trump as he navigates his new reality.
