Winter Weather Adds to Hardships in Gaza, Ceasefire Faces Challenges
Khan Younis, Gaza Strip – Heavy rains have brought new difficulties to Palestinians in Gaza, who are already struggling with the effects of the ongoing conflict. Makeshift camps are flooded, and families are trying to stay dry in tents that have been worn down by months of use.
These challenges come as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss the next steps in the ceasefire agreement. The initial phase of the ceasefire, which began in October, aimed to increase the flow of aid into Gaza.
In Khan Younis, displaced families are dealing with soaked blankets and mattresses. Some are trying to remove water from their tents, but resources are limited.
“We drowned last night,” said Majdoleen Tarabein, who was forced to leave her home in Rafah. “We don’t know what to do or where to go.”
Eman Abu Riziq, also displaced, said her family is struggling to cope with the loss of her husband, and the constant fight to stay dry makes things even harder.
According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 12 people have died from hypothermia or building collapses related to the weather. Emergency workers have warned people to avoid damaged buildings, but many have nowhere else to go. Reports indicate that a large number of buildings in Gaza have been destroyed or damaged.
While the ceasefire has reduced fighting, progress has been slow. Israel has stated that it will not move to the next phase until the remains of all hostages from the initial attacks have been recovered.
Aid organizations have pointed out that the amount of aid entering Gaza is not enough to meet the needs of the people. While some supplies, like tents and winter clothing, have arrived, the need is much greater.
Challenges in the next phase of the ceasefire include establishing a stable government in Gaza and disarming groups that pose a threat to peace. Both Israel and other groups have accused each other of violating the current agreement.
