Hope Returns to Gaza Amidst Ceasefire
WADI GAZA, Gaza Strip – Following an announcement by the Israeli military that a ceasefire with Hamas was in effect, many displaced Palestinians in Gaza began heading back towards their homes on Friday.
After two years of conflict, many Palestinians expressed relief at the pause in fighting. While eager for the violence to end, they also spoke of the pain caused by loss and uncertainty about the future.
Jamal Mesbah, displaced from northern Gaza, said, “We packed to return home, but struggles remain.” He added that the ceasefire eased the psychological pain of death and bloodshed experienced by loved ones during the conflict.
The ceasefire came hours after Israel’s Cabinet approved a deal to temporarily halt fighting in exchange for the release of remaining hostages held by Hamas and the release of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
The war began after Hamas launched an attack into Israel in October 2023.
Many Palestinians are eager to return, but some remain cautious. Ala Khandour, who lost his home, wants to find shelter for his children. Rana Saleh, who fled her home, is waiting in Khan Younis until she is confident it is safe to return. Mahmoud Sharkawy is also waiting before returning to Gaza City.
The conflict has resulted in loss of life and destruction in Gaza.
Fatma Radwan, displaced from eastern Khan Younis, returned to find widespread destruction.
Nawal Aboul Deeb expressed hope for the truce to last, saying, “Have some mercy on us. Have some mercy for all that we have witnessed.”
