Skeletal Remains of Wanted Sex Offender Found in New Hampshire Shed
In a chilling discovery, skeletal remains found in an abandoned shed near a New Hampshire state prison have been identified as a wanted sex offender, Michael Schilz, aged 59. Authorities were alerted to the situation when an anonymous tip came in on April 21, prompting Concord Police to investigate the ramshackle structure located directly across from the correctional facility.
Upon arrival, officers discovered bones that, according to the Concord Police, had likely been there for an extended period. The police stated, "The body of the deceased subject appeared to have been within the shed for an extended period of time."
The circumstances surrounding Schilz’s death remain unclear. As of the investigation, he had not been reported missing, raising questions about his final days. Deputy Chief Barrett Moulton informed local media that there were no records of Schilz being reported missing prior to this shocking event.
Following the discovery, the remains were sent to Concord Hospital for an autopsy, where they were confirmed to belong to Schilz. He had previously been on the New Hampshire Department of Corrections’ radar as their “Fugitive of the Week” earlier this year for violating parole conditions.
Schilz was no stranger to the criminal justice system. In 2005, he was convicted of aggravated felonious sexual assault on a minor, and his name was listed on the state’s sex offender registry. Records indicate that he had been living homeless in the Concord area.
Authorities are still waiting on a conclusive cause of death, further complicating an already mysterious case. While local residents have expressed disbelief over the event, it’s a stark reminder of the issues surrounding homelessness and crime in the area.
The shed where Schilz was found has a dark history, resembling something from a horror novel with its dilapidated structure and ominous surroundings. Situated on North State Street, the shed is surrounded by overgrown bushes and leafless trees. An old basketball hoop hangs crookedly at its entrance, marked by a “Warning: No Trespassing” sign, hinting at a long-abandoned space that attracts little attention.
Interestingly, the property where the shed stands was the scene of a tragic arson in 2005, a case that remained cold for years until an arrest was made in 2018. Following the arson, the area has largely been neglected and empty, aside from the unsettling shed that now holds a more gruesome secret.
Reactions from the local community highlight the surprise and distress surrounding this discovery. Employees at a nearby massage parlor expressed shock, stating they could hardly believe that such a grim finding had occurred so close to their workplace. "We are just shocked and surprised," one employee said, reflecting the sentiment of disbelief that many residents are feeling.
This incident serves as a grim reminder of the complexities surrounding individuals who fall through the cracks of society. The discovery raises pressing questions about how the systems meant to protect the public can sometimes fail, and the tragic outcomes that can result when individuals like Schilz go unaccounted for.
As investigations continue, there’s a palpable sense of unease in the community. The lonely and eerie shed not only marks a tragic end for one man’s life but also raises questions about the safety and wellbeing of vulnerable populations, particularly those struggling with homelessness and criminal backgrounds. The community will continue to watch closely as more details emerge regarding the life—and tragic end—of Michael Schilz.
