The suspect involved in a tragic shooting at Florida State University (FSU) on April 17 has been named as 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner. The announcement came during a press conference held by Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeil. Ikner is the son of a deputy who has served in the department for 18 years.
Sheriff McNeil stated that unfortunately, Ikner had access to one of his mother’s service weapons, which was located at the scene of the crime. He also noted that Ikner had connections in the law enforcement community, being part of the sheriff’s office youth council and participating in various training programs. McNeil described the event as devastating.
The shooting, which took place near the student union, resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left six others injured. FSU Police Chief Jason Trumbower reported that authorities were alerted to the shooting at 11:50 a.m., and Ikner was quickly apprehended.
The two victims were not students at the university, and Ikner himself was hospitalized following the incident. Reports confirm that he is believed to be a student at FSU. During the incident, Ikner was found with a handgun, while a shotgun was discovered inside the student union. Authorities also recovered another firearm from his vehicle.
The investigation into the shooting is being led by the Tallahassee Police Department. In response to the incident, FSU has canceled all classes for the remainder of the week.
