The Philadelphia Flyers and the Ottawa Senators have made a trade involving two defensemen. Dennis Gilbert, who recently was with the Flyers, is heading back to the Senators. In return, Maxence Guénette is joining the Flyers.
Gilbert, a 29-year-old defenseman, had a brief stint with the Flyers this season. He was sent to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, the Flyers’ minor league affiliate, but hasn’t played since late October due to an injury. The Flyers felt that Gilbert was no longer a good fit for their team, as other players had moved ahead of him on the depth chart. Several defensemen, including Noah Juulsen and Emil Andrae, have solidified their positions, making it difficult for Gilbert to get playing time in the NHL with the Flyers.
The Senators, on the other hand, needed more depth on the left side of their defense, especially with Thomas Chabot injured. They also knew Gilbert from his time with the team last season, where he played in four games. So, the Senators decided to bring Gilbert back into their organization.
Guénette, 24, was drafted by the Senators in 2019. He played seven NHL games for them in 2023-24. However, after Lassi Thomson returned to the organization, Guénette’s future with the Senators became unclear. He had requested a trade during the offseason, and the Senators granted his request.
The Flyers signed Guénette to a one-year deal. He is a younger player with some potential. He has shown good offensive skills in the AHL, scoring 116 points in 236 games. His size (6’2 and 209 pounds) is also seen as a plus.
However, Guénette may find it challenging to get regular playing time with the Phantoms. There are already several other right-shot defensemen on the team.
Overall, the Flyers see potential in Guénette and are willing to take a chance on his talent. They are also moving Gilbert, who didn’t have a clear role with their team, to a team where he might be a better fit.
