TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State University has decided to cancel all home athletic events, including its final spring football practices and an important baseball series against Virginia, due to a tragic shooting that occurred on campus. This incident, which took place on Thursday, resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left at least six others injured.
The two victims were not associated with the university, but the shooter is believed to be a student. According to Florida State University Police Chief Jason Trumbower, the shooter was the son of a sheriff’s deputy, and a service weapon previously used by the deputy was involved in the incident.
An alert was sent out by the university around noon, warning of an active shooter near the student union and instructing anyone still on campus to shelter in place. As a result of the situation, all classes were canceled until Friday, and athletic events have been suspended until Sunday.
The cancellations affect several sports events, including football, baseball, and a scheduled softball series against Georgia Tech. Meanwhile, the university’s women’s golf team is participating in the ACC Tournament in North Carolina, the women’s track team is competing at the Tom Jones Invitational in Gainesville, and the men’s tennis team completed their match in Louisville as planned.
This incident has understandably created a period of concern and mourning within the university community.
