Large Sea Turtle Returns to Ocean After Rescue in Florida
Juno Beach, Fla. — A large sea turtle named Pennywise has made a triumphant return to the ocean after being rescued and treated for injuries sustained from a boat strike. Found in May along the Florida coast, this adult female turtle weighs 302 pounds and has undergone several months of care at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center.
Veterinary technician Marika Weber expressed her relief and joy, stating, “Sea turtle interactions with boats can often be deadly. It’s incredibly special to see Pennywise recover and return to the wild.” After costly and extensive treatments, including a visit to a specialized horse clinic for imaging, it was discovered that Pennywise was carrying eggs. This highlights her vital role in the marine ecosystem, especially as sea turtle nesting season is now underway.
“We were thrilled to have our entire community and team here to send her off,” Weber added. The commitment to helping these endangered creatures is crucial, as all sea turtle species are under threat.
As nesting season in Florida lasts from March to October, officials from the center are urging boaters to be cautious and reduce their speed in designated sea turtle protection areas, which extend a mile off the coast. This initiative aims to protect these magnificent creatures during a critical time in their lifecycle, ensuring they can continue to thrive in our oceans.
